14. Led Zeppelin

Everybody knows Led Zeppelin; it's one of the most popular bands ever. Few people wouldn't admit the significance of this band. It's hard to find a band that had such an influence on development of rock and metal music. They are widely considered to be one of the most successfull, innovative and influentioal rock groups in history. Led Zeppelin had influenced and inspired lots of hard rock and metal bands, such as Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Queen, Dream Theater, etc.

Led Zeppeling members are Jimmy Page (guitar), John Jones (bass and ), Robert Plant (vocal) and John Bonham (drums). All of the members are geniuses and very professional musicians. For many people Jimmy Page is considered to be the best guitarist ever. Plant's voice abilities are unthinkable (listen "Going to California"). John Jones is a versatile musucian that plays about ten different instruments. And John Bohnman is, to my mind, the best drummer ever!

Being a drummer, I'd like to focus more on the drummer of LZ John Bonham. To my mind, Bonham is the best drummer ever! He really inspires me, and I'm trying to play the way he does. Of course, I'll never be like him, but he is my guide and teacher. Particulary this is because my real teacher is a fan of Bonham as well. Bonham proves that drumming is not just noise. He plays very musically, mightily, energetically and expressively. Bonham makes me understand that drums as an instrument, not just accomoaniment for guitars. Unfortunately, John Bonham died at the age of 32 because he had drank too much alchohol. After John's death Led Zeppelin has fallen apart, and it didn't devide as a true band anymore (they only manage to give a few concerts).

There are differnt opinions about the genre of Led Zeppelin's music. Hard rock, heavy metal,  blues rock, folk rock – all these genres are being related to Led Zeppelin. Even though many people consider LZ to be a hard rock, folk rock or even heavy metal band, to my mind, it's unfair to relate LZ to any of these genres. LZ is too unusual and its member are to imaginative for hard rock and heavy metal. Also I don't think that LZ has a lot to do with folk music. It may seem strange, but LZ is actually the heir of and blues music. If you listen to it, you'll see that most grooves and riffs are very similar to blues ones. So, we can see that Led Zeppelin is the bridge between blues and modern rock and metal music. Yowever, there are some folk features there as well. So, I'd say that Led Zeppeline is the mixture of blues, folk and hard rock.

Led Zeppelin's songs are full of light, kindeness and sincerity. However, some people still believe they're agressive and there's also was a hearing about LZ being related to satanism. In 1982 some christian TV chanel  claimed that the most famous and significant LZ song "Stairway to heaven" contaons some satanic message. They proved it by saying that they reversed the tape and heard a satanic text. Rober Plant commented it that way: "To me it's very sad, because "Stairway To Heaven" was written with every best intention, and as far as reversing tapes and putting messages on the end, that's not my idea of making music".

Led Zeppelin had excisted only for twelve years (1968-1980). Nevertheless, this band managed to play dozens of songs that are now some of the most popeluar songs in the world. They've made an invaluable contribution in rock music and music in general. So, listen to Led Zeppelin and enjoy it!

  1. Tim, good night!
I have just read this blog about Led Zeppelin and I found it very interesting, as well as your great presentation in class! I have never listened to their music before your presentation, no, to be precise, I have heard only one song. But when you turned on the music I was a bit impressed of the strength of this music. I really felt the rhythm and found it very good. Now I understand why they are your favourite group! They are cool))

  2. I also like Led Zeppelin. My tastes are more pop about this group - I like "Stairway to Heaven", but I like it not for the specialities you've mentioned. I am agree with you that "Led Zeppelin's songs are full of light, kindeness and sincerity". As for me, LZ seem to be quite old. That has its positive and negative sides. For me, Bob Dylan and ABBA are also old, they make me feel like a guy from 70's or 80's. I love oldschool rock.
