6. Poetry

David's topic #3 (free choice)

Honestly, I haven't read much poetry in my life. I didn't even read many poems we had to read at school. Despite that I really love poetry and it has always been something special for me. For me poetry is not just rhymed and beautifully composed prose. What I like about poetry is that it can breifly convey any idea or thought. By the way, first I liked poetry only for its brievety. But then I started feel like I'm really enjoing it.  A good poetry is able to create a special atmosphere. And it's much harder for a prose to do it because it usually requires for an author to write a lot of prose text to do it. However, I can't say that I don't like prose. I'd even say that prose and poetry are imcomparable because each of them are good in their own way.

For me poetry is something that unites and conncts people. I mean, there're some famous rhymes and poems which almost all of us know.  Almost all Russians know Puskin's, Lermontov's, Mayakovskiy's, Akhmatova's lyrics. For British people it's probably Shakespeare, Byron (or someone else). It's easy to quote poetry and, what I like most, it's cool to read it outloud. A couple of days ago I and my grandfather read Lermontov, Akhamatova and Pushkin, and it was fantastic! Reading poetry outloud is a special thing for me. This poetry night made me think that older people know poetry much better than we are (or at least better than I). It seems like my grandpa can read almost the whole Pushkin's "Eugene Onegin" by hard. It really impresses me!

  1. Wow, "Eugene Onegin" is really long. I can't believe your grandpa has nearly memorized it! I alsot enjoy reading poetry from time to time, but I tend to read more modern poets than the ones you mentioned. We'll do a whole unit on poetry later this semester. I hope you enjoy it.
